Forgot About that $#!+ Friday: A Subtle Suicide Note
By Joe Parello @HerewegoJoe
Back in 1999, there were plenty of reasons to want to kill yourself.
There was the Y2K scare, Columbine High School shooting, Monica Lewinsky's cringe-worthy sit-down with Barbara Walters, Wild Wild West (Both the movie and song), Cher's "Believe" topping the charts, and Bret Hart getting his brains kicked out by Goldberg.
I don't know which one of those things pushed Papa Roach lead singer Jacoby Shaddix (No seriously, that's his real name) over the edge, but he made it pretty clear in his band's breakthrough hit "Last Resort" that he "Can't! Go! On! Live! Ing! This! Way!"
In this incredibly deep suicide ballad, Shaddix ponders "Would it be wrong, would it be right, if I took my life tonight?" To which he answers aloud "chances are, that I might. Mutilation out of sight."
Then, for those that don't fully appreciate the subtlety of his lyrics, he simply states, "And I'm contemplating suicide."
You know, just in case you didn't get that from the rest of the song.
But, it turns out that Shaddix was going for attention, not for keeps, because I just Googled this fool, and he's still alive! So congratulations, your fake suicide note shot your band to the top of the U.S. rock charts, and allowed you to travel on Warped Tour, the Issues Tour with Korn and perform at Ozzfest.
Not to mention that every time I think about moshing, this is the song that pops into my head. So go ahead guys, get angsty and mad again, check out the video below.
