Bob Lobel: Boston Sports a Welcome Distraction This Summer
By Bob Lobel @boblobel
Boston sports always have a way of providing stuff to talk about.
Ryan Dempster decided to do the honors this week, taking it upon himself, in incredibly selfish fashion, to give us all something to cling to. Of course, he threw at A-Rod. Of course, the fans at the park cheered.
Blah , blah blah…
Just when you think you have nothing to really talk or write about, the Yankees show up and bring their most reviled player along for entertainment. I cannot in good conscious say that all was right with Dempster’s Deed. In fact, there was nothing right about it, including not getting ejected by the home plate umpire.
It was not right that Joe Girardi was ejected, although his antics demanded it. It’s a rare moment when you are standing behind the enemy because they were right in their logic. Sunday night was one of those moments.
At least Dempster didn’t throw at his head, so give credit where credit is due. But the credit stops there.
This came about due to the misplaced priorities of the Red Sox pitcher, and they have won him the praise of Red Sox nation for now. But, the game was lost, and A-Rod came back to hit a mammoth home run on a Dempster pitch that went out faster than it came in.
Truthfully, I don’t know how A-Rod can perform like that under the blanket of boos and everything else swirling around him. Unable to talk to his own management, the complicated mess that Alex Rodriguez has created is like an invisibility cloak from Harry Potter when he steps on the field.
Is this why he gets the big bucks? Apparently!
Never really seen anything like it. Here comes the problem… Did Dempster singlehandedly awaken a very mediocre Yankee team with his foolish mission to become the giant killer?
Might have! Some say the “hit by pitch” had nothing to do with the outcome of that game, but I disagree. It might have had everything to do with it or somewhere in between, but the answer isn’t “nothing.”
So again, the Red Sox provide. They always have and they always will. Believe me when I tell you they will be providing, good or bad, more than ever in the next month and a half. Gotta love it, and a new sell out streak is on the way.
I would like to stop now but I really cannot. This has been the summer of the villain and A-Rod, although a villain in the eyes of baseball fans, can’t compare with the summer of sin we have experienced here. It stared with the Marathon bombers, was amped up by Aaron Hernandez, and was to the point of piling on with the Whitey Bulger trial and subsequent 31 guilty verdicts.
The Jared Remy case is so fresh and so close to all of us, we can’t yet process it. Actually, trying to process this whole summer will take some time. Yes, Jerry Remy is the father. He is also one of the most beloved sports icons that has battled his own illess. No one can imagine what the families on all sides have to go through. Actually, I cant imagine anyone ever getting though it.
But I do I know this… There are two little girls with no more fathers around and one with no mother now either. What of them? Where do they go? What happens to their lives? We talk about insignificant things, like hitting people with pitches or finding a running game or stuff like that.
Sport is the toy store of the world, but not around here at this moment in time, during this summer. “Boston Strong” is not just a slogan, it’s become a way of life.
