CMass Lax Power Rankings: 4/14/14

Grafton came up just short against St. John's in last season's Central Mass title game. The Indians will get a shot at revenge this week.

As you may or may not know, I am currently on my honeymoon in Amsterdam.

This means a few things. Firstly, that I am not covering any lacrosse games this week, and secondly that all of my opinions for these Power Rankings come from scoreboard watching. But, most importantly, it means these rankings will be brief so I can get back to enjoying myself.

Sorry guys, but I'm taking it easy this week. Anyways, here are our weekly Power Rankings and Game(s) of the Week.

1. St. John's: 4-0, 0-0 Catholic Conf. D2       Last Week: 1
2. Shrewsbury: 6-0, 4-0 Midland A. D2        Last Week: 2
3. Grafton: 6-1, 4-0 Mid-Mass. D3                Last Week: 4
4. Algonquin:  3-1, 3-0 Midland A. D2         Last Week: 3
5. Westboro: 3-1, 3-1 Midland A. D2            Last Week: 5

In the Hunt: Nashoba (1-4), Worcester Combined (4-0), Littleton (3-0), Leominster (3-1)

St. John's continues to dominate, and a great win by Shrewsbury over Marshfield from D1 Eastern Mass locks the Colonials into the second spot. Grafton lost a tough one out of district against Franklin, but the Indians made short work of CMass foes Nipmuc and Tantasqua, beating those two squads by a  combined 18 goals.

Algonquin gets dropped back for a week that included a one-goal win over Nashoba and a 9-goal loss to Eastern Mass power Westford Academy. But the T-Hawks know this is a marathon, not a sprint, so I wouldn't look for them to panic heading into a critical league match with Shrewsbury on Tuesday.

Westboro, meanwhile, bounced back from a loss to Shrewsbury with a pair of wins, including a one-goal thriller over Nashoba. Speaking of the Chieftains, Nashoba may just be the best darn 1-4 team in the state. With losses to St. John's, Algonquin, Westboro and Shrewsbury, there isn't a loss to be ashamed of on the Chieftains' resume, but now it's time to start collecting wins for the playoffs.

Worcester's Combined lacrosse team continues its unbeaten start after huge wins over Northbridge and Nipmuc. Could these guys be for real? We'll find out this week, as they travel to face a tough Tantasqua squad.

Littleton remains unbeaten, and the Tigers gave Leominster its only loss of the season last week, but color me unimpressed with their one-goal win over St. Bernard's. For some context, four-loss Nashoba blasted the Saints 12-3, while Littleton escaped with a 10-9 win. The Tigers and Blue Devils are showing they have the talent, can they bring their A-games consistently?

Game(s) of the Week

Shrewsbury at Algonquin; Tuesday at 4 PM

St. John's at Grafton; Wednsday at 7 PM

I'll be brief and just say that Algonquin hasn't lost a Mid Wach A game in over three years, and that red-hot Shrewsbury would love to change that. In the Thursday game we have a rematch of last season's CMass Championship Game and, though many of the faces have changed, I would expect a similarly exciting shootout.

The winners of these two games will give themselves HUGE head starts when it comes to playoff positioning.
