Postgame Blog: Abington Dominates D5 Title Game
By Joe Parello (@HerewegoJoe)
For the second consecutive year, things unraveled quickly for Northbridge.
The Rams couldn't get going offensively in 2013 against Bishop Fenwick, and this year the Abington Green Wave used a similar formula to defeat Northbridge 36-6.
That formula included forcing three turnovers, and riding running back Shawn Donovan, who carried 13 times for 139 yards and three touchdowns.
Throughout the first half, Abington was just grinding away with its ground game, using Donovan's 80 yards and two touchdowns to take a 15-0 lead, but things opened up in a dominant third quarter.
Thanks to an interception and another touchdown run from Donovan, a punt return for a touchdown by Aidan Cawley, and a quick score from Bryan Dwyer, the Green Wave scored three quick touchdowns and put the game to bed at 36-0 with five minutes to play in the third.
The game ended with the state's longest tenured coach, Abington's Jim Kelliher, defeating the state's all-time wins leader, Northbridge's Ken LaChapelle.
If there is a silver lining for Northbridge, it's that this team is STILL ahead of schedule. The junior-heavy Rams lose only six seniors and will be favorites to get back to Gillette next season in Division 5, but no doubt this performance is deflating for a team that has now lost two straight state championship games by a combined score of 64-6.
